Gotta second "The Road". I picked it for my book club this year (it was a shelf-sitter), and didn't regret it. I'm sure it's no news to you, but it's a very dark book so I'd recommend having something light and fun on the roster afterwards (I was prompted to start re-reading the Thursday Next series after finishing)... perhaps The Fourth Bear! ;) I found "The Road" to be a pretty quick read, although whenever I had to set it down for real life stuff, I always picked it up again with extreme trepidation because of how chilling it was. Anyway, it gave me a lot of food for thought, and it was very affecting and moving; as a parent, I think you'll only find it all the more so.

The great thing about books, there still there months, years later. That's how I come to terms at least once a month with my backed-up reading list.

I know how you feel! There is no way I'll read any of the book on my TBR list at the rate that I keep adding them. I think I need to stop reading blogs, go hide in a corner, get my reading done, and then emerge triumphant but weary eyed.
