Australia felt similar to Benjamin Button to me in that way--big, old fashioned entertainment. Part of why I love Moulin Rouge is my crush on Ewan McGregor. I can go either way on the heartstring tugging. I saw the Reader last night, and didn't care for it, but the couple behind me loved it.

I really liked Australia, even though I couldn't stand Moulin Rouge. I like big sweeping movies that tug at the heartstrings - I like sentimentality as long as it doesn't cross the line into cheese. :)

I think I've now seen all four of his movies in the theater. Long, yes, but definitely worth it for the spectacle.

I really enjoy Luhrmann's other stuff, and am a fan of "over the top" cinema, so I do want to eventually see this. I think it would have been something to witness on the big screen (I still rue the day - er, months - that I never saw Moulin Rouge in the theater, but with a nearly 3 hour running time? I'm not sure I could do it... I like to watch long films at home so I have the luxury of taking breaks (that may span several days, if required).
