I liked Magical Thinking but I know what you're talking about. Didion's new one, Blue Nights, is extremely "chill and distant." Did not like it. The Pauline Kael biography is fascinating. I haven't had a chance to listen to more Thompson, but am looking forward to a good hour of housecleaning/listening tomorrow.

Jennifer, I'm so glad you're enjoying the Thompson. Isn't Ryan an ass? I haven't read the Kael biography, but have been meaning to read her for years. I did read a recent article about the ongoing spat she had with Joan Didion, which further made me want to read Kael, and further discouraged me from reading Didion's latest. I found Magical Thinking chill and distant.

I started The Year We Left Home today -- downloaded it onto my iPhone to listen to. An hour in. Hooked.
Have you read the Pauline Kael biography? Did you post about it and I missed it? The book is fascinating and jibes with what appear to be your primary interests.

This book is going on the list. Let the Right One In has been on the list for ages, but I've been dragging my feet like I always do with scary movies. Now I might actually watch it.

I have this, but of course haven't read it yet. I've read some of her earlier work and really liked it.

Don't you wish the library queue was like Netflix, so when you have X number of books out, they'd just automatically stop your queue? I try to be good about freezing requests, but like you, they slip under my radar all the time. I have a bunch on hold now until mid-December, with the hope that I'll get some of them to read over Christmas break.

Coincidence, I just finished it last week. It's still rattling around in my mind.
