Didion's new one, Blue Nights, is extremely "chill and distant." Did not like it. The Pauline Kael biography is fascinating. Isn't Ryan an ass? I haven't read the Kael biography, but have been meaning to read her for years. I did read a recent article about the ongoing spat she had with Joan Didion, which further made me want to read Kael, and further discouraged me from reading Didion's latest. I've read some of her earlier work and really liked it. Don't you wish the library queue was like Netflix, so when you have X number of books out, they'd just automatically stop your queue? I try to be good about freezing requests, but like you, they slip under my radar all the time. I have a bunch on hold now until mid-December, with the hope that I'll get some of them to read over Christmas break. I have this, but of course haven’t read it yet.
