To be hsenot, maybe it's because I'm more of an action fan than a zombie fan, I liked this movie more than Shaun. This just had me laughing even more than Shaun did. And I loved the gun battle' at the end! Great review nonetheless!

I agree that they were "flat" but it wasn't a problem for me; it was more an intriguing translation of a 2D B & W comic to a color film with real people. I think having an affection for geek culture really made a difference for me, where I liked Shaun, but don't love zombies, and liked Hot Fuzz more, as I enjoy silly cop movies more than zombie flicks.

I am not the biggest Shaun of the Dead fan (I like it, but didn't luuuuurve it as many do), but I did really enjoy Hot Fuzz. Visually I thought this movie was fine, but the characters and storytelling felt flat to me.

Thanks for the milk powder info. I was wondering if they even carry it at my co-op, or if I'll still have to make a special trip, but both Bob's Red Mill and Organic Valley make it, so I bet it'll be easy to find and I was just a fearful dork about it. I'm thrilled to hear that about Middlemarch. I'm totally picking it for my book group for May. Woo!

I'm answering your question re: milk powder here to be sure you'll see it. I spent much time wondering about mysterious milk powder and then it dawned on me that she's talking about powdered milk. Even if that's not what she's talking about, it works in the recipes.
I'm in the middle of Middlemarch and it is one of those Lonesome Dove/Suitable Boy reading experiences.

I liked that movie without reading the books!

I thought it was very fun! incorporated lots of fun stuff from video games (the coins falling) and comic books in general (all the fights are very superhero-y) and I just had a grin on my face the whole time.

I really like that pastiche of influence style which is what I like in Tarantino movies as well.

Steph, were you a fan of director Wright's other movies, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, etc.?

In the name of science, I will reveal that I have not read the books and vehemently did not like the movie. Watched it a few months ago and found it largely painful and while not entirely incomprehensible, I didn't really care about the story it was telling. And this is coming from a Torontonian, who should have been geeking out on all the references to her hometown!
