In the end, I pitied all three of the women, but my feelings for Patroclus were much more complex. And my concern makes it sound more negative than I felt, because it is a lovely, compelling book.

You make some good points. I really enjoyed this book. The writing was lovely and I thought Patroclus was a unique perspective to use to tell a well-known tale from a different angle. This story is always heart-breaking, no matter whose side you tell it from, and somehow, no matter what retelling I read, it always gets to me. Sort of like King Arthur. I know how it's going to end, but I read it and weep every time. The women in the book weren't much it's true, but there was a lot about the book to admire anyway.
