Esquire’s “75 Books Every Man Should Read”

Esquire doesn’t even pretend to objectivity in its “75 Books Every Man Should Read“:

An unranked, incomplete, utterly biased list of the greatest works of literature ever published.

That’s a good thing. And many of the books are pretty good too. For men AND women–I’ve read 12 of them, and many more are on my TBR shelves. But I think I only counted one female author–Flannery O’Conner–on the entire list. Come on. Only men can write great books for men? That’s just silly.

Gulp. I’ve only read five books on the list, although several of them are on my TBR list. I’m so glad to see that All the Kings Men was on the list, because it is easily one of my top five favorite books (this list is flexible but AtKM and Pride & Prejudice are always on it! ;) ), and is one I think everyone should read. Actually, of the (few) books on the list that I’ve read, I enjoyed them all a lot (for example: Huck Finn is a recent read of mine, but a book I intend to cherish for a long time to come), so perhaps that suggests that I should check out some of the other ones on there that I’ve never really considered before (or at least move the ones that I own but haven’t made it to up on my queue!)…
