My Favorite Kitchen Item

Jhumpa Lahiri recently discovered something I’ve suspected for a while:

And that was my revelation this June: one needs only a cast-iron skillet to survive.

When I muse on what I’d pack if the apocalypse strikes (I’m not the only one who does this, right?), the cast-iron skillet is near the top of the list. (Link from The Morning News)

As someone who is writing a cookbook about cast-iron cooking, I couldn’t agree with you more. I’ve been an evangelist of shiny black iron pans for as long as I can remember. Nice to read that you’re a fan as well.

I travelled with my Orange Le Crueset pot for almost a year all over southeast asia. It was full of spices and everything else you could get. I don’t think I could live without that pot.

Brian, you must be strong to haul that Le Creuset pot around; they’re solid! One of my runner up favorite kitchen items is my dutch oven by All Clad–a stainless steel, lighter version of the LC, so I know what you mean. Have you seen Julie/Julia? The orange Le Creuset plays a supporting role! I envy the spices I can imagine you having access to, there!
